US-Cert has released a security alert warning of vulnerabilities in all previous versions of Sun Java.  Java is used for 'cool' functions in WebPages and is commonly installed on most PC's to enable this functionality (there are some other options such as Microsoft's version but this was phased out a number of years ago so it is not widely used anymore). Upgrading your client to the latest version will eliminate the security hole.

A link to the US-Cert alert is below:

US-Cert Advisory:

The issue is resolved in the latest releases from Sun (of which there are multiple versions, depending on the release level you are running).  Check your SUN Java for an update function or visit http://www.java.com/en/download/ for the latest downloads.  Note, Sun Java may keep old versions as well which are not required; the instructions below will show you how to remove these.

Sun Instructions on removing old versions:

I highly recommend making the effort to perform this upgrade as any website you visit may be harbouring the hackers' code to exploit this vulnerability without your knowledge and it may allow them to take control of your workstation.

Java Versions

Hi, Can you please tell me the current Java version that I should be using? There seems to be so many versions... Thanks, Jon.

RE: Java Versions

Jon,

Best option is to go to:

http://www.java.com/

And simply get the recommended version for your Operating System (OS).

Cheers,

Aaron
